Bankart Repair

🧠 What is a Bankart Lesion ?

A Bankart lesion is an injury to the labrum—a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket (glenoid). This usually happens after a shoulder dislocation, particularly in younger or athletic individuals.

When the labrum tears, the shoulder becomes unstable and prone to repeated dislocations.

🛠️ What is Bankart Repair ?

Bankart repair is a surgical procedure to reattach the torn labrum to the glenoid rim, restoring shoulder stability. It’s often done arthroscopically (minimally invasive) but can also be performed open in some cases.

📅 When is it Needed ?

  • Repeated shoulder dislocations

  • Diagnosed labral tear on MRI

  • Shoulder instability during sports or daily activities

  • Failure of non-surgical rehab

  • Often done for anterior shoulder instability

🔧 Surgical Procedure (Arthroscopic Bankart Repair)

  1. Anesthesia : General (sometimes with nerve block)

  2. Arthroscopy : Small incisions made; camera and tools inserted

  3. Labrum Reattachment :

    • Torn labrum is cleaned

    • Suture anchors are drilled into the glenoid

    • Labrum is stitched back to the bone

  4. Closure : Incisions are closed with sutures

⚠️ Risks & Complications

  • Stiffness or limited range of motion

  • Recurrent dislocation (especially if returning to contact sports too soon)

  • Infection

  • Nerve injury (rare)

  • Failure of anchors or sutures

Success Rate

  • 80–95% success in restoring shoulder stability

  • Higher success in non-contact athletes and early intervention

  • Lower recurrence rates with arthroscopic vs. non-surgical treatment

Bankart Repair

Maybe. If it’s your first dislocation and symptoms are mild, physical therapy might help. But repeated dislocations usually need surgery.

Yes—PT is crucial for regaining strength, mobility, and avoiding stiffness.

Most people return in 4–6 months, but contact sports may take longer.

You’ll feel soreness for a few weeks, but pain is well-controlled with medication and rest.

  • Bankart repair: Reattaches the labrum (used for soft tissue injuries).

  • Latarjet: Transfers bone to prevent dislocation (used for bone loss cases or failed Bankart repairs).
