Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Total Hip Replacement (THR), also known as Total Hip Arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant (prosthesis). This surgery is commonly performed to relieve pain and improve mobility in patients with severe hip joint conditions.

Why is it Done ?

THR is usually recommended for individuals suffering from :-

  • Osteoarthritis (the most common cause)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Avascular necrosis (loss of blood supply to the femoral head)
  • Hip fractures
  • Congenital hip dysplasia
  • Post-traumatic arthritis

Types of Hip Implants :-

  • Cemented Prosthesis: Uses bone cement to attach the implant. Best for older, less active patients.
  • Uncemented Prosthesis: Allows natural bone to grow into the implant. More common in younger, active patients.
  • Hybrid Prosthesis: A combination of both cemented and uncemented components.

Surgical Procedure :-

  • Anesthesia :- General or spinal anesthesia is administered.
  • Incision :- A cut is made at the hip to access the joint.
  • Removal of Damaged Bone & Cartilage :- The femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket) are removed.
  • Implant Placement :- The artificial joint components are fixed in place.
  • Closure :- The incision is stitched and dressed.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

  • Hospital stay: 1-3 days
  • Walking with support: Within a day or two
  • Physical therapy: Starts immediately to strengthen muscles and improve mobility
  • Full recovery: 3-6 months, depending on age and activity level

Risks & Complications

  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Hip dislocation
  • Leg length difference
  • Implant wear or loosening over time

Total Hip Replacement Surgery

People with severe hip pain and mobility issues due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, hip fractures, or congenital hip conditions may need THR. It is usually recommended when non-surgical treatments (medications, physical therapy) no longer provide relief.

The procedure typically lasts 1-2 hours, but the total operating room time may be longer due to preparation and anesthesia.

THR can be performed under general anesthesia (where you’re unconscious) or spinal anesthesia (where you’re numb from the waist down but awake). Your doctor will decide the best option for you.

Most patients stay in the hospital for 1-3 days, depending on their recovery progress. Some may be eligible for same-day discharge in minimally invasive procedures.

Patients are encouraged to start walking within a day or two using a walker or crutches. Physical therapy helps regain strength and mobility.

While THR is generally safe, potential risks include:

  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Hip dislocation
  • Nerve or blood vessel injury
  • Leg length discrepancy
  • Implant wear or loosening over time
