📍 What is Lumbar Spondylosis?

Lumbar spondylosis refers to degenerative changes in the lower spine (lumbar region), including:

  • Disc degeneration

  • Facet joint arthritis

  • Bone spur (osteophyte) formation

It’s essentially “wear and tear” arthritis of the lower back, often due to aging.

🚨 Symptoms

  • Lower back pain (dull, aching)

  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after rest

  • Pain worsens with prolonged sitting or standing

  • Sciatica: Pain radiating to the legs (if nerve is compressed)

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in legs (in advanced cases)

  • Reduced flexibility or difficulty bending

  • Symptoms improve with rest or position change

🧪 Diagnosis

  • Clinical exam: Assess pain pattern, range of motion, nerve function

  • X-rays: Show disc space narrowing, bone spurs, facet joint changes

  • MRI: Reveals nerve compression, disc degeneration, spinal canal narrowing

  • CT scan: For detailed bony architecture (less common)

  • Nerve conduction tests (if significant leg symptoms)

🛠️ Treatment Options

🧘‍♂️ Non-Surgical Management (first line)

✅ Effective in most patients

  • Activity modification (avoid prolonged sitting/lifting)

  • Physical therapy: Stretching, strengthening core/back

  • Pain relief:

    • NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen)

    • Muscle relaxants

    • Neuropathic agents (gabapentin, pregabalin for nerve pain)

  • Heat/ice therapy

  • Weight loss (if applicable)

  • Postural correction

💉 Interventional Pain Management

  • Epidural steroid injections (for nerve root inflammation)

  • Facet joint injections

  • Radiofrequency ablation (burns nerve endings supplying painful joints)

🏥 Surgical Options

Only for severe or disabling symptoms, especially if:

  • Nerve compression causing leg weakness or bladder issues

  • Failed conservative treatment (>6–12 weeks)

Common Procedures:

  • Microdiscectomy: Removal of herniated disc material

  • Laminectomy: Decompress spinal canal

  • Spinal fusion: Stabilize the spine if instability is present

⚠️ Complications if Left Untreated

  • Chronic back pain

  • Progressive nerve damage (numbness, weakness)

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Reduced quality of life and mobility

  • Cauda equina syndrome (rare but serious)

Lumbar Spondylosis

No, but symptoms can be well managed and progression slowed with the right treatment.

Yes! Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, yoga are excellent. Avoid heavy lifting or impact sports.

  • Spondylosis = degenerative wear

  • Spondylolisthesis = one vertebra slips over another

If pain persists >6 weeks, or there’s leg pain, weakness, or numbness, your doctor may recommend MRI.

ACL reconstruction surgery involves replacing the torn ligament with a graft, usually taken from the patient’s own hamstring tendon or a cadaver donor. The goal of the surgery is to restore knee stability and function, allowing individuals to return to their pre-injury activity level.

Only 5–10% of patients with lumbar spondylosis require surgery.
